ExperienceI’m a PhD student in the Geography Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison studying environmental history and historical geography. I have eight years of experience teaching, tutoring, and mentoring students of all ages.
My Teaching Philosophy: One of the great paradoxes of teaching in general, and particularly on a one-on-one level, is that it requires more listening than speaking. I’ve often found that the best teachers and mentors (I’ve been lucky to have many) are so able to adapt their knowledge to the particular needs of a student or classroom that the division between what students need to learn and what a teacher offers appears seamless—even natural. In truth, however, this is a highly cultivated skill, and one that I’ve sought to develop in my own teaching over the years. I thus bring equal attention to content (my areas of expertise) and process (how to communicate that expertise to each student’s needs).
-Teaching Assistant, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2013-present: Developed and taught discussion sections for three courses (geography and history) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Developed and graded exams and assignment prompts. Advised students on papers and academic development during office hours.
-Private Tutor, Portland, OR, 2013: advised and tutored high school students at all stages of the college search process: college selection, college essay preparation, ACT & SAT preparation, and study skills.
-Writing Instructor, Aspen Writers’ Foundation, 2012: Developed and taught a place-based summer creative writing course for elementary school students.
-Environmental Educator, Aspen Center for Environmental Studies, 2011-2012: Developed and taught place-based tours of the natural history of the landscape surrounding Aspen, Colorado for members of the public ages 5-80.
-Student Academic Advisor, Whitman College, 2007: served as an in-dorm academic advisor for college freshmen. Devised individualized degree plans, discussed academic and career interests, edited papers, and programed study skills workshops.
HobbiesI'm originally from the mountainous Pacific Northwest, and take every chance I can get to be outside. Fly-fishing, skiing, boating, backpacking, biking, and trail running each is its own challenge and delight. I also grew up playing the saxophone and singing in choirs, and appreciate live music of any kind, especially jazz.
